I'm Sarah Kinney, and welcome back to season 4 of Darkness. You're listening to a bonus episode.

In episode 1, I told you that gun violence in schools has become the story of my generation here in

America. And so I think it's only right to show you what it's like growing up in American

schools today. Because lots of things have changed between 1966 and 2023.

What you just heard was a snippet of an active shooter training held at the University of Texas

in the spring of 2023. Katie Outka, the executive producer of this podcast, attended it.

Katie was a freshman journalism major at the University of Texas at Austin in September 2010.

When the shooter I told you about last episode, died by suicide in the university's main library.

She was a student and professor Steven Reese's class. You heard from him last episode.

Katie's been a full-time employee at UT for more than two years, but this was her first time

attending an active shooter training. Katie told me afterward the room was a mix of faculty

and staff. They watched a video produced by Florida State University.

It showcased one of the most popular forms of training for people in an active shooter situation.

We're talking of these three categories of run-hide advice. But I mean the stress to you all,

but these categories can go from one to another. Does that make sense?
