This morning, in a major ruling,

the Supreme Court struck down a New York law

that had placed strict limits on carrying guns outside the home.

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the majority

that New York residents can now carry a gun in public

without explaining to the state why they need to.

The decision in peril's similar laws limiting guns in public

in six other states, from California to Rhode Island.

This afternoon, we revisit an episode from November

in which my colleague Adam Liptak tells the story

behind one of the most significant gun cases

in American history.
