Murders are solved in a variety of different ways.

Sometimes to solve the crime, investigators may be able to rely on eyewitness testimony.

Sometimes the killer may confess.

But most of the time, enough pieces of circumstantial evidence

have to be gathered to identify the perpetrator and solve the crime.

These types of cases hinge on the meticulous analysis of forensic evidence

and expert detective work.

But how does the law go about solving a murder without a body? Without a body

how can it be proven that a murder was committed in the first place? It is rare

that detectives can prove a murder happened and get a conviction when no body is recovered, but it has happened.

In this month's series, Body of Evidence, I will share fascinating cases where crack detective work,

dedicated prosecutors, and a bit of luck,

solved some of the most baffling murder cases on record.

In this first episode, a young woman goes missing without a trace.

Detective zero in on a suspect right away, but without a body, a murder weapon,

or even a definite crime scene, investigators would have their work
