In our last interview, I spoke with John Piper about a famous sermon he delivered 23 years ago

that would go on to have a huge impact on his ministry in the years that followed, eventually

culminating in the publication of his best-selling book, Don't Waste Your Life.

Well, today, we're pleased to share a full audio recording of that sermon,

often referred to as Piper's seashell sermon, but originally titled,

Boasting Only in the Cross.

Preaching to a crowd of 30 to 40,000 young people,

Piper chose Galatian 614 as his text, where Paul

writes, Far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which

the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. Let's get started.

Father in heaven, you know how inadequate I feel at this moment. And so I ask for a very special anointing and help from you in the name of Jesus because of the cross where he died for me.

Father, it's a frightening thing to call a generation to die.

We sing of it very lightly. We run to this cross, which is where we should run.

And it is a frightening thing to call my sons and my daughters to die.

And so I pray that you would give me the grace to say what you once said,

not to say anything more or anything less.

I pray that you'd fill me now with your Holy Spirit.

I pray that you'd come upon this assembly with a sense of resolve to walk with Christ

to the peoples and to the campuses with the cross and on the cross.

Into your hands, Lord Jesus, I commit these few moments.

And pray that you'd guard me from the evil one
