On the morning of April 10, 2017, residents of the neighborhood of Hubbard Falls in the

city of Charlotte, North Carolina were preparing for their day.

It was a warm and sunny Monday.

So some residents were heading out early to fit in some exercise before going into the

office.

Others were heading to work, hoping that rush hour wouldn't prove to be too inconvenient.

Just after 7am, 50-year-old Marcella Thrasch arrived home after a gym workout.

When the former Marine turned a counting manager pulled into the driveway, she could see her

26-year-old son, Deonte, standing on the front lawn.

It was a somewhat unusual sight.

The pair lived together.

But Marcella wondered what could have happened for Deonte to be waiting for her outside.

Marcella could even get out of her car.

Deonte only stung his mother, stabbing at her furiously.

At the same time, a couple named Michael and Kim lived across the road.

Had an entirely unobstructed view of what was happening.

Staying inside their home, Michael dialed 911.

The couple could see Deonte, repeatedly stabbing Marcella.

By this stage was out of the car and sitting on the ground at the rear of a vehicle, breathing

heavily.

As Deonte lunged at his mother again, she sustained defensive wounds to her hands and chest.

As she tried to fend off the blows, Deonte seemed to be in a frenzy.
