Summary

Just a few days after the new EM interns start, today's episode will talk about my advice to new EM interns.  Think of this as the "big picture advice" or a 30,000 foot view of how to approach EM residency.  I'll talk about 4 major big picture points to keep in mind as you start your residency.  This will go way beyond arrive early, stay late, and always keep learning and expand on some big picture ideas of how to function well as a new intern.

Hey everyone, Steve Carroll here, and this is the EM Basic Podcast. Today's episode will not be about

0:06.8

EMCorp content. Instead, this episode is for the new incoming interns about to start their journey

0:12.4

into residency. It's an episode on the big picture advice that I would like to give new interns.

This won't be a long list of many little tips like show up early, stay late,

0:22.0

and always be learning. If you just started your intern year, then hopefully you've already figured

to start their residency, but if you're thinking about another specialty or going into another

0:48.4

specialty, I think this advice will translate pretty well. So let's get started. Here's piece of

0:53.7

advice number one.

EM residency is a three or four year exercise in figuring out what your attendings want.

1:01.3

The earlier you accept this, the better and more productive you will be as a resident.

1:05.5

What I mean by this is that every attending will have a different way of doing things.

1:09.9

This can seem enormously frustrating

1:11.7

at first, because it may seem like you're getting so many different messages. Think of it this way.

1:17.1

You're a single learner working with many different attendings. Each attending has their own

1:21.7

knowledge base, risk tolerance, and ways of doing things. On the flip side, I am a single

1:27.2

attending working with many different

1:28.7

learners. Each learner has a different fund of knowledge, a different way of thinking about things,

1:34.0

and a different way in which they learn best. As an attending, I wouldn't expect every learner
