Hello from CNN. I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Wednesday, June 4th.

Trade tensions are ramping up between the U.S. and China. In a post on his truth social platform, President Donald Trump says Chinese leader Xi Jinping is,

quote, very tough and extremely hard to make a deal with.

The comment comes after expected trade talks between the two

sides appeared to stall, just weeks into a 90-day tariff truce they agreed to last month.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is telling all U.S. trading partners to submit their trade proposals,

as CNN's Elena Treen explains.

Yeah, Joe, the Trump administration is alerting other countries that the time is now to make their best

offers to avoid facing other punishing tariffs from taking effect on July 9th.

Now, the directive is being delivered via letters from the Office of the U.S. trade representative.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt framed the letters

as a, quote, friendly reminder that the deadline is coming up and they are in talks.

Now, in my conversations with White House officials, they say that the letters were framed

more as a way to try and light a fire under these countries, that they need to get moving

on trade talks rather than an ultimatum.
