Hey, good morning. I'm Patricia Murphy. It's Friday. This is Seattle now.

It's the start of the holiday season, and we're revisiting some of this year's notable episodes. Today we'll hear how the local band Rub had a special opportunity to play at Seattle's Neptune Theater.

Earning a living as a musician can be challenging, and there's a lot to it.

Besides making music, you need to sell t-shirts, posters, and vinyl.

You also need to be active on social media and streaming services, not to mention going out on tour.

It's so depressing, but, I mean, you've got to play the game, I guess.

That is Kay Redden.

She founded the local record label Den Tapes, which makes physical cassettes for Seattle bands.

She also books bands at the Sunset Tavern in Ballard, manages Sonic Boom Records, and is a musician herself.

My only advice is just to make cloth goods because the profit margin on cloth goods is really good.

Make t-shirts. You'll make so much money. For some bands, breaking even is a measure of success.
