I think we made decisions about taking the arts out of school for all the right reasons that they were the long decisions.

You know, we thought that we could help our kids, you know, get down to business. We thought that we could, you know,

achieve these goals of greater workforce. But I think what we didn't know and what we forgot was that, you know, we are literally wired for the arts.

They are how we learn, they're how we grow, or how we heal.

Taking the arts out of schools was exactly the wrong decision.

It is my pleasure to have you here.

So you have this amazing new book out called Your Brain on Art, which as I mentioned before we hit record,

immediately went into my top 10 book list for the year because it was one of my absolute

favorite books. And I've read every book on creativity under the sun but to look at it from a

neuroscience perspective I thought was just absolutely brilliant but before we get into the

content of the book I wanted to start asking what did your parents do for work and how did that end up shaping what you've

ended up doing with your life career?
