I had the great pleasure of meeting Dr. Mike Winters on his first ever visit to Canada at North York General's Emergency Medicine Update Conference, where he gave two fantastic presentations. His credentials are impressive: He is the Medical Director of the Emergency Department, Associate Professor in both EM and IM, EM-IM-Critical Care Program co-director and Residency Program Director of EM-IM at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Sometimes we are so caught up with the job we need to get done during cardiac arrest that we forget about the important and profound effect that this event has on patients' families. On this Best Case Ever Dr. Winters tells the story of witnessing his grandfather's cardiac arrest, being present in the ED during the resuscitation attempts, and how that experience has coloured his practice. We discuss some pearls on communication with patients' families after death, colour-coded cardiac arrest teams and how to integrate POCUS into cardiac arrest care while minimizing chest compressions.

0:47.3	Awesome. So, Mike, before we get into your best case ever, can you just tell us a little bit about your
0:51.9	background professionally? Absolutely.
0:56.0	So I am from Baltimore.
0:58.0	I currently practice at the University of Maryland.
1:01.6	I'm an associate professor there in both EM as well as I am.
1:04.6	I did the EMIM training program at Maryland.
1:06.9	I stayed on as faculty following that.
1:10.4	And I'm actually the program director for the EMIM program. And in 2008, was able to put through
1:13.0	and get approved the EMIM critical care program. So I also co-direct that and have graduated a
1:19.7	number of residents who are now out practicing E.M. and critical care. And the last hat I wear is
1:25.5	actually medical director of our emergency department. So I wear a few
1:29.1	hats at the University of Maryland, but I have wonderful, amazing colleagues that I work with. I really
1:35.5	can't imagine a better place than University of Maryland. Wow. Holy credentials, Batman. I'm really
1:43.2	glad that Amel brought you up here to Toronto for this conference,
1:47.6	and it's a great opportunity to hear your best case ever. So let's just cut to the chase. Let it rip.
1:54.1	What's your best case ever? All right. So best case ever, you know, as we started talking about
1:58.5	doing the best case ever, lots of things ran through my mind.
2:01.9	Was it my son's case of anaphylaxis just a few years ago, which was extremely anxiety-provoking?
2:08.4	Was it some LVAD patients that have crashed, pulmonary hypertension, some patients we've recently put on ECMO?
