This is CBS, I On the World. I'm John Batchel. I welcome Judy Dempsey, a senior scholar for the Carnegie

Endowment for International Peace in Berlin. The big election in this calendar year in the European

Union, in my measure, is a German election in about one month. The campaigns are

well launched, and there's news in all directions. I begin, however, with the question of the borders

of Europe. It is striking how the U.S. is struggling with borders, and Europe is struggling with borders. At the same time,

there's a new president here and there's about to be a new chancellor, I believe, in Germany.

Judy, a very good day to you. Reuters reporting from Berlin. Germany's government and opposition

parties dueled over rival border control policies with opposition leader Friedrich Meritz leading the Christian Democratic Union,

the favor to become the next chancellor, saying he would advance his plan with the help of the far right if needed.
