Summary

(There was a very short period in Mike’s life where he thought he could handle his teaching job, write a book, host The Politics Guys, and start a new podcast – Politics Plus. It soon became evident to Mike how insane trying to do all this at once was, and so he quickly shut down Politics Plus. But before he did, he’d posted four interviews – all of which he thinks are pretty good and are worth sharing with you as Politics Guys bonus episodes.)   Mike talks with Beck Dorey-Stein, who worked as a White House stenographer from 2012 – 2017. She’s written about her experiences in the just released book, From the Corner of the Oval. They discuss: What White House stenographers do How being in the White House changed how Beck felt about politics If the White House is anything like the TV show The West Wing The insane hours and workloads of White House staffers What happens behind the scenes during crises ‘Living the dream’ in the Obama administration Her view of President Obama What it was like to come to work the day after Donald Trump was elected What it was like working in the Trump administration And lots more Listener support helps make The Politics Guys possible. politics, economics, history and culture. I'm your host, Michael Baranowski, a political

scientist at Northern Kentucky University. Before we get to today's interview, I wanted to let everyone know that I am changing the release

1:15.3

schedule for Politics Plus. Originally, I thought I'd be able to do a show every week, but it turns

1:22.0

out that that's not going to be sustainable for me in the long run. Basically between doing Politics Plus and the

1:28.9

politics guys, and oh, by the way, I have a day job teaching, I realized that if I wanted to put out

1:34.6

a new show for Politics Plus every week, the amount of time I'd have to spend reading and

1:41.5

trying to get authors and other people to come on, there would be no way I could do that

1:46.5

without just being a lot more superficial in the sort of questions and my review of their books.

1:52.1

And I just did not want to sacrifice quality for the sake of, you know, putting out content on a

1:57.9

regular basis. So from now on, it's still going to be every Monday, but it'll

2:02.4

be every second Monday. And I think that will allow me to keep what I think is the same

2:07.9

good level of quality and not just, you know, throw content out there at you, but really
