Summary

Jakob Shockey, founder of the Beaver Coalition, has spent years researching and working to preserve, restore, and understand beaver habitats. He discusses with Bret the rarely discussed impacts of Beavers on all aspects of our world, and how we have thrown this equilibrium out of balance by trapping beavers and industrializing north America with little regard for preserving the factors that made it as hospitable as it has been.

this morning with Jacob Shockey, who is founder and executive director of the Beaver Coalition.

0:14.8

Now many people will not know what the Beaver Coalition is. I should probably say right

at Evergreen how many years ago would that have been? 2010. 2010, that seems a long time.

0:33.6

There's been some stuff that has happened since 2010.

0:36.0

A bit of a different world.

0:37.4

Yeah, it is a very different and in many ways more troubling world. In any case, welcome

0:43.8

to the Dark Horse.

0:44.8

Thank you for having me.

0:46.1

Glad to do it. There's a lot that we might talk about here and many different topics

0:53.4

that are interrelated in various ways. I will say that this conversation is spurred by

0:59.1

the fact that you came to Portland, you're living in southern Oregon these days, but you

1:05.8

came to Portland while Heather and I and our family were living there.

1:11.5

You walked us around some Beaver habitat and frankly, which he told us blew our minds.

1:18.2

We both know a bit about Beavers, we're both outdoors people who have encountered them

1:23.6

periodically and know about them from some academic work.

1:27.6

What you said really changed our understanding of the role that Beavers play and have played

1:34.6

in North America. I thought it would be a really good idea to bring that different perspective

1:42.1

to a much larger audience.

1:44.1

Do you want to say something about how it is that those of us who think we know something

1:49.2

about Beavers get it wrong?
