Summary
This week, it's just Kate, an Aperol Spritz, and the tech bro quote about wine that accidentally kicked off the conversation we've all been needing about optimization culture and being tired of treating every part of life like a performance review. Plus, a round of News You Can Use about why fruit hasn't been sweet since 1996, this season's hottest mnemonic devices, the babydoll dress of it all, and reviewing what Olivia Rodrigo is doing differently in Drop Dead and The Cure, all of it strangely circling back to living in a world that quantifies us without letting the number become the whole story. Enjoy!

| 0:15.8 | week is just me. Just me here. And we're going to meander through some recent goings on, |
| 0:20.4 | pop culture news uh you know |
| 0:23.3 | favorite segment of mine this week and people hate women uh because there's a few conversations |
| 0:28.9 | happening about like olivia rodrigo like scuba taylor swift a few other items we'll get to but first i |
| 0:33.7 | want to get to something very important that i really believe in, that or rather don't believe in. |
| 0:41.0 | There was a kind of viral clip going around this week that a lot of people were stitching and commenting on that, like, delighted me to my corn is the very reason I pour this app where all spreads next to me. |
| 0:49.6 | Not only is it Friday evening. |
| 0:50.6 | There is a piece of discourse happening right now. And you know I love like recursive |
| 0:55.7 | inception, like discourse about the discourse about the discourse. Sometimes when they're like these |
| 1:02.4 | passing trends, people like over stitch. I'm like, I'm good. I'll sit at sit this one out. |
| 1:06.6 | But this is actually something I feel so strongly about. So this week Stephen Bartlett, |
| 1:10.7 | host of Diary of his CEO, one of the biggest pockets in the world. He's the kind of guy that like perpetuates a lot of this self-optimization culture, wellness culture. He tracks everything. He probably knows his resting heart rate at any given minute. Like he, there was this quote that a lot of people were stitching in responding to where he basically said a couple of glasses of wine ruined the next like three days of his life. Where you don't understand the hidden cost until you really give it up for a while. And I think about my own relationship with drinking and I stopped drinking at 30 years old. I'm now 33. And I had just drank because I just drank. I'd never ran the experiment of just giving it up for a while. And then like,, I don't know, maybe I was at 31. I thought, you know, I have a drink again. |
| 1:46.9 | Because now I could really A-B test it. I had a year of not drinking, decided to have a drink again. It ruined three days of my life. I had a couple of glasses of wine. Didn't get drunk. It ruined three days of my life because of the domino effect it caused. |
| 1:59.4 | So it meant that I got worse sleep that night. |
| 2:01.5 | And then because I got worse sleep that night, |
| 2:03.3 | I ate more poorly the next day because my dopamine system or whatever, the cortisol system was all messed up. And then I podcasted worse. I didn't go to the gym the day after, that day or the day after because of that, because I felt really bad. I then slept worse. |
| 2:17.9 | And I could track all of this on my week, hashtag ad, hashtag sponsor, hashtag investor, whatever. Oh. Yeah. And I was like, oh my God. Those three glasses of wine had this hidden domino effect. I don't even think it's about him or that clip as much as it, like I think served as a conversation we've been needing to have for a while, which is people's level of general fatigue with optimization culture and with tech bros like him that are forever |
| 2:39.4 | evangelizing, performance tracking everything you do outside of work, making your regular life feel |
| 2:44.9 | like work, therefore robbing yourself of joy. Now, as women, we were taught to do this, I don't know. Day two, out the womb. I'm not sure |
| 2:55.4 | when I first realized I should change everything about myself and always be self-improving to |
| 2:59.1 | be told any value or worth as a human, but it was early on. We are not new to the idea of |
