Summary

Barry Keoghan returns to the podcast to discuss a movie he made in Ireland that never got its full theatrical release. Calm With Horse is a beautiful piece of story telling from first-time director Nick Rowland that transports us to a west of Ireland town run by a family known as the Divers. Barry’s character, Dympna, controls Arm a former boxer roped in to enforcing the dominance of the gang in the local area. A crisis of conscience and his young son force him into a situation from which there appears to be no escape. Jarlath and Barry dig into what makes a low budget classic like this so special and why now, more than ever, the film needs the support of viewers in lockdown when it releases on demand on April 27th.   There’s a lot to cover as Barry opens up about the non-disclosure agreement he signed to play one of the lead characters in Marvel’s next big franchise The Eternals. We hear about the fasting Barry forced himself to do in order to be in shape for the role within three weeks of being cast, his tactics for coping with lockdown, his plans to direct, the project he has been building around the story of Billy The Kid and more. There’s also news on an up-coming episode of Coronapod and Jarlath’s own weird experience when he applied the law of attraction to driving around Ireland last August.   To access this episode in full and to hear all of our episodes in full each week, visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad and sign up for just the price of a pint every month.
