Help, how do I stop my dog barking! This topic gets requested so much I’m turning it into a series. Most people refer to a dog’s verbal communication as barking, but what if you reframed it as vocalizing – just as humans do with whispers, laughing, yelling, sobbing, squealing? It’s all communication. In part one of this series I’m analyzing the 5 reasons dogs bark and identifying different meanings of canine communication with vocalization. Plus, learn how to decrease excessive barking while understanding the emotions behind your dog’s howling, baying, barking, or whining.

In this episode you’ll hear:

• Five reasons dogs bark and what to do about nuisance barking.
• That dog vocalization is communication first.
• The basic dog needs every owner must consider.
• How to decrease unwanted dog barking.
• How different dog breeds vocalize.
• That barking is an emotional expression.
• About frustration, anxiety, loneliness, and alarm barking.
• That some senior dogs bark because of dementia.
• How we accidentally reinforce demand barking.

And so I decided that we would take the most asked about topic and share it to celebrate our 100,000

0:25.2

Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog. And what is the most asked about topic you may ask? It's barking. Barking dogs, number one by far that we get asked and so much so

0:57.8

that it's going to have to be a series. So today I'm going to share with you a different perspective

1:04.5

about barking dogs. I want you to think for a moment that dogs are both verbal and nonverbal

1:09.9

communicators. If you own a dog, then I know you

1:12.3

know that. And for verbal communication, I want you to think less about barking and think more

1:20.1

about vocalizing. Because vocalizing is something that we as humans do as well. And we have different ways to vocalize. For example,

1:31.0

we can talk. Hello, I'm talking. We can whisper. We can yell. We can squeal when we're

1:37.8

excited. We can sob when we are sad. We can laugh. All of those are ways that we are vocalizing. Our vocal cords

1:48.4

are projecting sound. Well, if you consider that dogs are doing the same thing, you might just

1:54.5

change your attitude towards that barking dog. Consider for a moment, what if dogs are just trying to communicate with us?

2:03.7

Remember, I've said this many, many times. A dog has needs that we really, as pet owners,

2:11.4

should be meeting. If you don't have the time in your life to make sure your dog gets out and

2:16.0

gets fresh air, gets some exercise,

2:18.8

gets enrichment by you engaging in some games with them, training them. Yes, even older dogs

2:25.9

love that. All of those things contribute to a dog having a balanced well-rounded life.

2:33.0

And if you have that dog that has a balanced well-rounded life. And if you have that dog that has a balanced well-rounded

2:37.4

life, then you're going to find the barking that frustrates you the most will likely come down
