Summary

Juggling training by itself is hard. Juggling training along with real life obligations is even harder. Add the physical and psychological changes that come with menopause and midlife? Oh boy. Better call Cirque du Soleil for some tips. Or you can call a lifelong athlete, veteran coach, and exercise physiologist like this week’s guest, Lenita Anthony, who provides sound, science- and life-based advice on planning your exercise sessions, balancing intensity with recovery (especially when it comes to high intensity intervals), and setting exciting new goals during this time of life. Lenita is a longtime fitness industry presenter, author, and master educator for Stages Cycling. She is a National Board Certified Health Coach, and has over 25 years experience in clinical exercise physiology and fitness education. A former IDEA contributing editor board member, her expertise includes program design for special populations and sports performance. A lifelong athlete, Lenita raced triathlons of all distances, including the Ironman Hawaii World Championships in Kona. In more recent years, she has put her competitive focus into track cycling, where she has won National and World Championship titles, and set 4 age-group World Records in Individual Pursuit and Team Pursuit. Her passions include volunteering as a Ride Leader for the Challenged Athletes’ Foundation, strength training, and surfing with her sons near her home in San Diego, California. **Support the Podcast** InsideTracker: 25% off at insidetracker.com/feistymenopause Nuun Hydration: 30% off at nuunlife.com with the code HITPLAY

Hello, strong, feisty women.

So, before we get to it this week, I have to tell you a few things about my weekend last week.

0:39.6

I was up in Ascutney, Vermont for the Vermont Overland, which for those who don't know about the event is a really big gravel race.

0:48.6

And really gravel in this context is just a big umbrella term that includes ancient, unmaintained roads that are

0:56.0

really just rocky, steep suggestions of roads with huge potholes and large rocks and drop-offs

1:03.1

and sandy roads and muddy roads, all kinds of roads. Gravel really just doesn't do this one justice.

1:13.6

It's also 54 miles long and packs a whopping 7,000 plus feet of climbing. I mean, it's Vermont. It's not flat. As a special

1:21.5

treat this year, it dumped buckets of rain on us the night before. And though it looked like it was going to be a nice day,

1:31.1

just as the gun went off, it started pouring on us again. And that lasted for about an hour or two

1:37.3

at the start of the event, turning those unmaintained suggestions of roads into a carnival ride of mud, slop, sand, and slippery sensations.

1:47.9

It was pretty fun.

1:49.2

But my point here is, as is the case with many of these events, the field was about 20 to 25

1:54.9

percent women, which is often what you get.

1:57.1

And I know promoters are working on bringing more ladies into the game.

2:02.1

But what I found really super cool was how many in the feisty demographic there were. As I was riding, so many

2:10.8

women wrote up to me to say hello and thank you for the podcast and I love what you're doing.

2:16.3

Hell, there were men who came up to me and said, my wife loves your podcast.
