Summary
Have you ever taken a swing with a towel or headcover held in your armpit? If so, have we got an episode for you! The truth of the matter is that you need some arm lift in your backswing. In today's episode, Mark helps Lou understand how arm lift works in the backswing, while Greg offers his thoughts as well. This is useful all the time, but especially if you're working on changes to your swing in the off-season. Better arm lift will help generate easier power and also give room for a shallower downswing.

| 0:00.0 | Let's talk some golf back swing basics today. I think this is quite a fun episode and chat we're going to have around what your arms are doing in the back swing in the realms of going up and down, so lifting or not. And this is something I do see a lot of golfers not really fully understand or get right. It's actually built around a newsletter that I did. If you want to watch it in video form, there'll be a link down below, which will go a bit more into depth. You'll be able to visualize actually see what we're talking about as well if you want to watch that later on. I know, Greg, I'll start with you. You've watched the video. I sent you the video about arm lymph. Did that, did it make sense? Was it new information to you? Or did you think, I kind of know that already. What, what did it mean to you off the top of you? No, it, um, I didn't know that already, but I am cognizant of what you were talking about in terms of arm lift as, as I get older. I think, and this is just, you know, anecdotal, obviously I feel like as I get older and lack of mobility, |
| 0:55.9 | this is something I need to be cognizant of. |
| 0:58.1 | It is something I work on because my strike does improve. |
| 1:01.6 | Yeah. |
| 1:02.2 | And ever since we did an episode on elbow width at the top of the back swing, this is something that I've combined with that. |
| 1:10.2 | Yeah, absolutely. |
| 1:11.0 | It does go. |
| 1:11.5 | And so, yes, I thought it was very cool. |
| 1:13.9 | Cool. |
| 1:14.3 | And Lou, I know, are you aware your arms are meant to lift? |
| 1:17.9 | I'm not sure. |
| 1:19.3 | There we go. |
| 1:20.6 | So he sends this video and I see that it's about arm lift and I just assume I'm getting |
| 1:25.0 | Rick rolled in some way, shape or form. So I don't even watch the video. So please explain to me what this video is about. I will. All of Mark's future videos are going to be about leg length and arm length. Yeah. Yeah. Leging length in the back swing. What does it mean? A relationship between body length and arm length in the back swing. |
| 2:01.2 | And then we talk about Lou for an hour, up an hour. Love it. Perfect. Looking forward to this one, Jens. So if you think of a top of the back swing position. So think about the club at the top of the back swing. You kind of see the triangle, if you like formed with the four, like the lead arm and the trail arm. if you're looking down the line and your hands are kind of maybe above your head or above your shoulders and the |
| 2:06.2 | club's pointing down somewhere at the target. So think of a classic back swing position that |
| 2:11.4 | you'll see, you know, every still image of a tour per and you've probably looked at yourself on |
| 2:16.2 | video. There is an element |
| 2:18.5 | in that position getting the club up there of your arms physically just lifting up and when i mean |
| 2:24.2 | lifting up if i stand facing a golf ball and i put my arms out in front of me holding the club |
| 2:31.6 | and then i just pick my arms up so they're still out in front of me that's me just then I just pick my arms up. So they're still out in front of me. That's me just lifting my arms. I'm not turning or tilting or rotating. I'm literally just putting my arms down to pick up the club. And now I'm kind of in set up position. And in the back swing, there's an element of your arms just literally lifting straight up. It's happening as your body is turning and tilting. |
| 2:52.9 | So this lift isn't happening out in front of you like it does in that way. I just explained |
