Summary

Welcome back to Brunch with Desb! Today, I am excited to welcome Rachel Shepard, a.k.a Hey, Sleepy Baby to the show! Rachel, a sleep specialist and mom of three, has a Bachelor's and a Masters in Elementary and Special Education, and has worked as a K-5 teacher and Education Specialist over the last 9 years. When her first baby was born in 2017, she became obsessed with his lack of sleep. Her own sleep deprivation and the outside pressure to get his sleep under control had her struggling with undiagnosed postpartum anxiety. The messages she was receiving from friends, family, coworkers, doctors, and social media made her think she was doing everything wrong. All of the pressure led her to try sleep training, which did not work out, so she surrendered and let it go.

In this episode, Rachel will tell us what inspired her to become a sleep specialist, the sleep techniques she’s used on her children, and some of the resources she offers to parents. Then, we’ll dive into the idea of baby-led sleeping vs. sleep training, including:

  • Contact napping and trying to get things done while baby is sleeping

  • Wake windows

  • Things you can do during the day that may help yours and your baby’s sleep

  • Whether there is a correlation between breastfeeding and your baby not wanting to sleep

  • Nursing to sleep

Last but not least, we’ll also touch on postpartum anxiety, including the sunset scaries, and the importance of doing your own research and doing what’s best for you and your baby. Remember that you have choices!

1:14.0

Something else is coming out of my mouth every single episode I swear make sure you check that out so you can find her and find what she does and learn even more this episode is not about mom shaming or giving negative feedback to those who choose to sleep train their babies which is what Rachel kind of goes against the grain with if we want to call it right she she's very educated and she loves to share a different option.

1:44.0

And I guess that is really the umbrella term of this week's episode is giving you parents new moms moms to be options choices and giving yourself more education than what is always out there.

1:57.0

I'm very excited to get into Rachel's story because as you kind of hear how she fell into this beautiful and amazing company that she's created and so many moms that she's reached you'll understand what she was going through very much like you and I might have already gone through.

2:13.0

So without further ado let's get into the episode make sure that you rate review and subscribe to this make sure you check out my latest YouTube video as always I will put everything in the show notes and let's get into it.

2:43.0

Rachel I like that I'm honored brunch with desby we talk every week about really anything but since we've I've shifted in the motherhood a lot of talk.

2:56.0

End up coming full circle to like how am I doing how with my community doing how are my fellow moms doing so I'm excited to chat with you today.

3:04.0

Obviously you're a certified sleep specialist you specialize also in breastfeeding your mom of three and you actually had a career before this so elevator speech 30 seconds we meet.

3:17.0

How would you introduce yourself to someone who's never heard of you before yeah so I like you said I'm a sleep specialist so I work with families mostly on social media now not as much one to one but.

3:29.0

Just how to I teach people how to optimize their little one sleep without formal sleep training methods so I my passion really is just to teach moms that they're already doing an amazing job and that their baby is probably doing exactly what they are meant to do and I just really love teaching people about normal infant sleep using evidence and research and.

3:50.0

At the same time encouraging people to just follow their intuition and follow what feels right to their family yeah I love that on your website even it says something along the line which I love your website by the way super easy to read.

4:02.0

I love the branding but it says something about like teaching you how to just better listen your intuition or yeah however I'm paraphrasing that but again such a.

4:10.0

Yeah powerful message for a lot of mom so we're going to dive into all this like sleep training and I hopefully years are purking up of kind of like that sleep training like what the heck does that mean right so in short again as on your website helping parents ditch the stress and pressure surrounding sleep they can find solutions without compromising their parenting style you have courses you have guides you have a team as well as yourself doing consult and one on one so immediate icebreaker before we dive into conversation.

4:39.0

If you could use a movie title to describe the effect sleeping had on your introduction to motherhood what would you call it and I know this it take a second if you have to.

4:51.0

Oh my gosh you just came into motherhood and sleep we're just thinking sleep in the start.

4:58.0

Oh my gosh probably something like doomsday like like the day after tomorrow or like something really something really and scary yeah absolutely like new mom goes insane yeah my introduction to motherhood and sleep and all of this stuff I was just so completely unprepared I just had no idea what I was in for even though I have a master's in education I've taken tons of like different child psychology.

5:27.0

Child psychology courses and I babysat my entire life and like I'm an old oldest child like I have been around babies my entire life and still like my world was completely rocked so yeah I think probably a lot of new moms feel that way right like we take birth we take birth classes maybe we take a breastfeeding class but a lot of people are just totally like thrown for a loop with the sleep thing.

5:50.0

Absolutely so you you mentioned a little bit you know have I've worked with kids I you know went to school for education so tell us a little bit about that you know you mentioned to your past and then that 3 a.m. feeding that kind of had you just change the trajectory of your life yes truly about it truly yeah so I was a teacher like I said I've always loved kids when I was little I thought I would be a pediatrician because I just loved babies and kids so much.

6:18.0

Then I found out that pediatricians had to do things like you know go to medical school and I was not so into that so I decided to become a teacher and when I moved out to California I found a great public school up in Marin County and worked there as a they called it an education specialist but really what I was mostly doing was creating plans and managing a team and working directly with families and children who have special needs and disabilities so I did that for.
