Summary

In this episode of the podcast, Murray answers two questions, both on the battle of the Hydaspes.

The first was sent in by @gregoriogariglio7750. How many Macedonian and Indian casualties were at the Battle of the Hydaspes?

The second question is from @jsoth2675. Is it possible, or likely even, that the battle of Hydaspes against King Porus was fabricated? Are there any Indian sources that agree a battle took place?

Hi everyone and welcome to another episode of ancient warfare answers with me, Murray,

0:11.6

your weekly fix of 10 minutes of ancient warfare related stuff to take a break from whatever's

0:17.5

going on in the modern world. Today, I'm going to be answering two questions

0:21.8

on the same topic, so two birds with one stone, from Gregorio Gagaliglio, I believe, 775, a comment

0:30.4

from YouTube, and also J-Soth-2675, another comment from YouTube, both on the same topic, roughly.

0:37.5

Gregorio's question was, how many Macedonian and Indian casualties were there at the Battle of Idaspi,

0:44.0

or the Hydaspe's River, fought probably in July 326 BC, more of that in the moment.

0:50.3

And the second one from J-Soth is, is it possible or even likely that the battle

0:55.4

of Hydaspe against King Porus was fabricated? Are there any Indian sources that agree a battle took

1:01.2

place? Great content, as always. And thank you for your time. Thank you, J-Soth, for asking a question.

1:07.2

And Hugh Gregorio. Now, first question, we do have multiple Greek and Latin sources

1:12.6

for the battle, so we can begin to break down the casualties. They, of course, as so often in

1:20.4

ancient sources, don't agree. So your question of how many is in fact complicated by the fact

1:26.1

that our sources don't actually agree,

1:28.6

but there's a reason, there's some logic.

1:31.0

I'll get to that.

1:31.9

And secondly, the short answer to your question, J-Soth, is I don't believe that it was

1:36.3

fabricated.

1:36.9

I do believe that it is a battle that took place, but there are extenuating circumstances.

1:42.4

The reason for such a question, of course, is that in

1:46.2

none of the very rich Indian tradition of history and other writings is porous even mentioned.

1:53.6

And so the idea has sprung up that because we have the Nanda Empire at the same time in northern
