Of course, we have to paraphrase any question with,

10 minutes. We try to stay within limits. Anyway, enough preamble. Murray today is going to try and

answer Anne's question, which is how did Hannibal manage to supply his army? And I'm sure we're thinking especially

about the great big elephants trying to cross the Alps. Right. Indeed. Well, the very short

answer is we don't know. But he must have had to feed them, obviously. These things don't just

happen. And it's one of those things in most of our

sources that they don't concentrate on. Probably the only one where we get the minutiae of securing

supply is in Caesar's Gallic Wars, where he tells us about laying in supplies at this place,

that place, that place. But there's some logistics of working out Hannibal's logistics that we have to go through.
