Hello and welcome to a very special episode of The Shadow of Sitdown podcast. I guess this

0:12.6

is less special than the last time we did that, but that's right. Today's Shadow of Sitdown

0:17.2

is just me, just little old Ava Foxfort sitting in her house and talking to you about games.

0:28.5

Now, today I want to be talking a little bit about some solo games. Now, this might not be as

0:35.0

in-depth as would normally be on the podcast, but I kind of want to give you a flavor of some of the

0:39.9

reasons why people do like playing solo games and some of the things that I've genuinely been

0:45.4

quite excited about when playing these games. Now, we're going to be looking at three games today,

0:51.4

at least a little bit on each. We've got Marquis by Sideroom Games, which is a little game about

0:57.8

French resistance worker placement in World War II. We're going to be talking about Aranienberger

1:05.0

1:13.3

Orangey Town. I don't know, I probably should look that up. I'm probably also going to pronounce it

1:19.0

wrong repeatedly, sorry. This is the new Uve Rosenberg. It's a yellow box of canals and

1:27.0

cards and buildings and some surprisingly smooth solo play. Finally, I will want to touch a little

1:33.5

bit on the big daddy as far as I am concerned. For a very long time, the only game that I would play

1:40.4

solo was Mage Knight by Vladyshev Atel. Now, this is a beast of a game and there's reasons,

1:48.8

but I love it and I never recommend it to anybody apart from me. Solo games have been interesting

1:56.6

one. It's very easy to be sniffy about solo gaming because it often feels like it's missing

2:01.6

a very important element. When I talk to people about how special board games are, one of the things

2:08.1

that I'm likely to be saying most is, well, you're sat at a table with your friends and you're

2:12.6

talking and you're playing and you're pushing buttons and moving things and making all of the game

2:18.2

happen. And because of that table top-y gather roundiness, there's a real, real special

2:23.9

something like whatever happens in the game you're going to be spending time with people who you
