Hi, this is Michael Silverblad, and welcome to Bookworm. What you're about to hear

is a very special interview, which I did with Austrin Wayne House, who's the director and

publisher of the Marlborough Press from Marlborough, Vermont. I've been wanting to have Austrin on

my show for some time because the books that

his press publishes, most of them translations of modern European literature from French,

from Italian, are wonderful books, very impressive. And it's very, very few presses where I could say

any book published by the Marlborough Press is worth your time, is worth looking into.

There are a couple of others, maybe Sun and Moon, maybe Marsello books, but very, very few.

And so, Austrin Wainhouse, who's been bringing us books by some of the most impressive post-existential European writers,

has been doing a great service with the Marlborough Press.

But when I was talking to him, I realized that Wainhouse is the translator of all of the Dessad that we have in English, all the works of the Marquis de Saad.

And I thought to have the translator of thousands and thousands of pages of this great French transgressive writer in the studio, it might be a more interesting interview to talk about the Marquis de Sade and his influences on contemporary writing.

Now, I want also to recommend the Marlborough Press.

I am particularly fond of the work of Emmanuel Bov, whom they publish.

He's a French writer who was an influence on both Colette

and Samuel Beckett, so you can imagine that Bov is a rare writer indeed. His book is called Quicksand.

They publish a novel by Alberto Savinio called Tragedy of Childhood. This translated from Italian,

Savinio was the brother of the amazing surrealist painter DeCirico.
