This is CBS, I am the world. I'm John Bachelors, downtown Sydney.

A huge fire.

Roaring into the nighttime and then during the day, black smoke pouring out.

And I welcome Scott Maaman of CBS News, who's in Brisbane.

This is when we're coming wintertime. The temperatures are brisk.

And the fire looks to have been out of control for a while. I watched the video of the fireman pouring water on it.

The smoke and the flames damaged all the buildings around them.

And I'm told this is downtown Sydney, which I don't know, so I depend upon Scott.

Scott is this old parts of Sydney, the original colony, good evening to you.

G'day, John. Yeah, this is mixed in with a lot of heritage area, but you are right.

It is downtown Sydney, central station just around the corner, central railway station.

This was an incident which had the whole of Australia glued to their TVs to watch this building just go up and smoke and let the fire,

which lasted about 12 hours.

135 fighters were involved in fighting this blaze.

Now, we're lucky.

It was kept within that particular building.

Sure, there's going to be smoke damage and other related damage to the surrounding area.
