A young 22 year old female presents with severe headaches that prevent her from doing her job to your office.

She notices that they are unilateral throbbing in quality and sometimes they're brought on by stress and other times it's preceding her menstrual cycle.

And every time the patient would eat wheat, she would get the wildest headaches she ever had.

The patient would say that her pain would reach a peak and then

suddenly she would vomit. When you see the patient you're perplexed and unsure of the

diagnosis so you refer her to a leading neuro-discipline. perplexed and unsure of the diagnosis.

So you refer her to a leading neurosurgery center.

That's right, an actual surgeon.

You send the patient to Memphis Baptist hospitals,

neurosurgical service to be under the care of neurosurgeon Dr. Raphael Eustis Semms.

Sems was the first neurosurgeon in that city,

and not just the first neurosurgeon in that city, but the first neurosurgeon in that city and not just the first neurosision in that city ever.

And it turns out he was trained by a pretty famous doctor himself.

Who was he trained by?

Well that doctor's name was Dr. Harvey Cushing of Harvard University who would later be

heralded as the father of modern neurosurgery. Besides all the amazing things he did, he also

trained Dr. Eustace Sembs, who is now taking care of our patient in Memphis.

His solution to the headaches was called a cranios cerebral exploration.

This procedure would be done through a burghole, and what he did was under a burhole.

And what he did was under local anesthesia, he broke open the skull, opened up the

Dura, and then found no evidence of a tumor.
