Summary

Savannah Locke introduces All the Buried Women, a compelling new miniseries that uncovers the hidden stories of women within the archives of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). What started as a small passion project grew into a year-and-a-half journey into the history of America’s largest Protestant denomination. 0:07.3	and I am here to introduce a new podcast from the Bible for Normal People to you, called All the Buried Women.
0:14.4	Here's how it happened. In the spring of 2023, I was working in marketing for the Bible for Normal People.
0:22.3	My boss and co-host of the Bible for Normal People podcast, Jared,
0:26.7	since that I was getting restless and encouraged me to find a passion project.
0:31.5	If I came up with something, he said he would help support it however he could.
0:36.1	So I tucked the idea away for later.
0:39.1	A few months passed, and one day, while I was posting something on X, formerly known as Twitter, for work,
0:45.8	I came across a post from Beth Allison Barr.
0:49.2	She shared an image from the Southern Baptist Convention's archives,
0:53.1	a letter written by an eight-year-old
0:54.9	girl in the early 2000s asking the Board of Trustees why they wouldn't let girls preach.
1:01.5	I'm not Southern Baptist, but I grew up and currently live in a suburb outside Nashville,
1:07.5	the heart of the Southern Baptist world. This is not a lie. There are 14 Southern Baptist churches
1:13.6	within 10 miles of my house. Whether I like it or not, the Southern Baptist Convention, otherwise known as the SBC,
1:22.0	influences the air I breathe. If you're in America, they've influenced you too. From politics to media to cultural norms,
1:31.0	the Southern Baptist Convention's reach extends far beyond the walls of their almost 47,000 churches.
1:37.9	Their decisions, doctrines, and debates have shaped national conversations about gender,
1:43.8	race, and power for decades. To give you a hint
1:47.3	as to how unfamiliar I was with the insides of the SBC, I didn't even know they had archives.
