This is super exciting, but let's not get carried away. We've spent the last

few weeks expanding our freedom of Spanish expression, and will continue to do so. But if we want to

sound more and more like native speakers, we need to keep sticking closely to the exact way that they form sentences.

We have to practice as closely to true native patterns as possible.

This is more important than most students recognize, and I'll show you why.

Imagine that you're trying to learn a song to perform in concert, accompanied by a large orchestra.

The song is in Hungarian, a language that you don't know, but you spend three weeks preparing

it in the privacy of your own home.

One week before the big day, you get together with the orchestra to have a rehearsal together.

After a few successful run-throughs,

the conductor dismisses the instrumentalists, but then he calls you over for a private conversation.

He says, I think you're getting this one line wrong. You respond, oh, am I misreading the notes?

And he says, no, the notes are right, but the correct meaning is, I wish I knew the way.

You've switched the syllables around, and what you've been singing means my hovercraft is full of eels,

which I don't think the Hungarians and the audience will appreciate.

How embarrassing.
