becomes a major obstacle in the way of

comfortable conversation. You learn most effectively when you're both challenged and affirmed

with both of those elements in balance. Let's turn listening comprehension from a weakness

into a strength.

So there's a popular myth among language learners that simply immersing yourself is a good way to learn Spanish.

In my own experience with hundreds of students, I've seen that this attitude almost always leads to catastrophe,

especially for their listening skills.

If you go out on the street and talk to some random Spanish speaker, you might be overwhelmed

and discouraged that you can't understand them and they can't understand you, creating a negative

experience. Your strongest, most memorable association with speaking Spanish in a conversation would then be a vivid event of stress, failure, and discouragement.

Let's imagine that you're being guided up a very challenging staircase. A good guide will always know which step you're currently on,

and they'll be able to lead you gently but firmly to the next one.

Immersion, on the other hand, expects you to be at the top of the stairs right away.

This encourages you to skip steps, which can be more disastrous than you might think.
