Summary

In this episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, Tim chats to former Arsenal goalkeeper Aman Dosanj. Aman was, almost certainly, the first British South Asian to play for Arsenal Women and was certainly the first British South Asian Woman to represent England at any level. Tim talks to Aman about her career, her route into football from her childhood in Southampton and how she got to Arsenal, idolising David Seaman, her scholarship to Tennessee, her career ending due to a knee injury and subsequent work with Kick It Out and the FA and her drift away from football to open an Indian restaurant in Canada.

Hello and welcome to the Arsenal Women AskCast on Ask blog.com. Apologies that this is our first episode in just over a month but as you can maybe detect from my voice very inconveniently

0:26.5

I got laryngitis over Christmas and the new year it's taking a very very

0:30.6

long time to shift it's been about a month and this is the best that my voice has got to in that time and it turns out that not having a voice is quite a large impediment to podcasting so we haven't been able to put out an episode since

0:44.3

myself and Carl on Carpenter got together before Christmas but we do have an

0:49.1

episode for you now and this originally this episode was going to be in two parts but actually now

0:56.6

it's going to be a two-parter not least because the quality of the conversation

1:01.8

I'm about to have, I think, really warranted that.

1:05.4

You may recall on AskBlob News in November, we wrote an article about the kind of the lack of

1:10.8

ethnic diversity in the Arsenal Women's Squad and across women's football in the UK in particular.

1:17.6

And we featured many voices in that article, but I think it's probably fair to say that when we talk about this subject

1:25.0

about the lack of ethnic representation

1:28.0

or the lack of ethnic diversity in women's football,

1:31.0

we don't, or maybe it was just me, I don't know, don't talk about the

1:36.3

kind of the South Asian angle as much as the angle with black girls because I think

1:42.1

with black girls for example there's been there's

1:45.5

been a quite a stark drop in representation whereas with South Asian girls that

1:50.4

representation has really never been there in women's

1:54.2

football and we're going to talk about in the next episode in the second

1:59.2

episode we're going to have a conversation about that more generally with a couple of really well-informed guests

2:05.6

around that and we'll talk more broadly about participation of South Asian girls in women's football.

2:11.6

But in this episode, I'm delighted to be joined by

2:15.4

Uman Dossange and Uman is probably the first and maybe even the only British South Asian woman to play for Arsenal women.
