Courage. We're drawn to it. Whether it's in movies or books or newspaper articles, we love

stories of courage, of men and women doing hard things even in the face of great adversity and risk.

And we see courage displayed throughout the Bible in the stories of the prophets and the apostles

and the early church.

But all of this can sometimes leave us wondering, what does Christian courage look like for me today?

My guest today is Joe Rigney, and in our conversation we discuss what it really means to have

Christian courage.

We explore why, contrary to common misconceptions, true courage isn't the absence of fear, but

rather requires it.

How the way of courage runs between two ditches, cowardice on the one hand, and recklessness

on the other.

And why true courage is so important for all believers, especially

leaders. Joe Rigney serves as a Fellow of Theology at New St. Andrews College, and is the author

of many books, including Courage, How the Gospel Creates Christian Fortitude from Crossway. Let's get

on the Crossway podcast. Yes, great to be here. So just to start off, how would you define Christian

courage simply? Yeah, Chesterton's always a great place to start because he's so memorable.

Courage is a strong desire to live, taking the form of a readiness to die.

That's such a, you call that the paradox of courage.

Yeah. Unpack a little bit more of what he's getting at when he says it like that.

Yeah, so courage has this sort of double vision element to it.

There's a division within us.
