The United States has tracked what officials describe as a Chinese reconnaissance balloon

over the continental US this week, in what would be an aggressive act of intelligence gathering

over sensitive national security sites.

China declined to confirm whether it sent a spy balloon over the US,

but said it wanted to handle the allegation calmly with Washington.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman said that local officials were still collecting information about the allegation.

US officials said the balloon was first spotted Wednesday by civilians in a commercial airliner.
