Epidemiologists are often referred to as disease detectives. When it comes to epidemics, one job is to determine who was patient zero and how did they spread the illness. One of the

most effective ways to halt an epidemic is to identify who a sick person has been close to and

quarantine both the infected person and all of his or her contacts. But figuring that out is no easy task.
