Hey, deserving listeners. I thought I would answer patron emails today. This first email is from

0:05.2

M. from Maryland. They write, I've been watching your series on 90-day fiancé and your brief

0:11.6

discussion on colonial ideologies with Lisa and Usman has left me wondering about the ethics of

0:18.1

countering potentially harmful ideologies and clients. Part of me recognizes that attempting to

0:23.7

address such ideologies with clients could damage the therapeutic alliance and that people might

0:29.4

interpret this as an attempt of the therapist to force a certain political perspective onto their

0:34.1

clients. Another part of me feels that not only could silence be interpreted by the client

0:39.9

as an endorsement, but also that failing to name prejudiced ideologies and their sources could

0:45.6

ultimately withhold from the client critical insight as to the source of their emotions in certain

0:51.5

situations. My question is when and how do you ethically address client behaviors that perpetuate

0:57.2

systems of oppression? As a future potential non-binary therapist of color, I do also feel I

1:04.5

have a personal stake in exploring these questions should a client have a prejudiced attitude

1:09.6

toward my identities and of email. Yeah, M. in Maryland, extremely intelligent email and very

1:17.8

well discussed here and what I will say in brief is that this is a tough question and there are

1:25.2

many considerations and you are describing the tension between the two sides very eloquently.

1:31.4

On one hand, we don't want to push our political views on our clients. On the other hand, we need to

1:37.6

stand up for the oppressed and do what is right, do what is moral, and we need to try to help

1:43.6

change our society one person at a time. So what do we do? Do we refrain from saying what was on

1:51.9

our mind and do we refrain from trying to, you know, because essentially what we're trying to do is

1:56.8

say, hey, you have a racist or you have an oppressive or you have a colonial ideology and as

2:03.9

you're a therapist, I'm recommending that you change it. Now, you should probably have a justification

2:10.7

like with Lisa Newsman, for example, on 90 day fiance, the reality TV show that I was reacting to.
