Israel passes the one-year anniversary since October the 7th, 2023, and works out what the next year, months, weeks and days hold.

You know, it is a year in which the Jewish high holidays are all intertwined with

memorial days for October 7th. So this week in which we marked a year

since October 7th is also the week of Yom Kippur, which leaves us all in the contemplative mood,

wouldn't you say? I would. And I think we've been in that mood for weeks, really. The lead up to October the 7th was in a way all part of it.

And the fact that it coincided, as we talked about with Rabbi Angela Bukdal, this period, this days of war.

Anyway, this is a period in which Jews are reflecting.

And they are thinking about the year that's gone. They are

bracing in some ways for the year ahead anyway. That's all part of the process. But the fact that

these things have now become interwoven with each other, you know, the day itself of the massacre

of October 7th was Simchatura. It is now embedded in the Jewish calendar.

That will be marked in the secular calendar on October the 27th. But it means these things are

tied up together. And I found myself thinking in recent days whether that is now how they will

always be thought of, that we will enter this period, the High Holy Days,

and always have this extra shadow of October the 7th. But the day itself did come. And there were

you know, ceremonies, memorials, small ones, large ones all over the Jewish world, including

here in London, in a rainy hide park.
