First thing we kind of treat and we're done with talk or sit silently and listen to our thoughts.

0:15.2

Hello and welcome to the show but wait you say that's not the usual song I hear when I refresh my feed from the history chicks and you would be right dear listener you would be right.

0:27.4

It's not the usual song because this is not our usual project. So if you found us by searching for Anne with an E welcome let's introduce ourselves I'm Beckett Graham and I am Susan

0:40.8

Volumweider normally our show is about historical women as we just covered the author of Anna Greengables L. M Montgomery we thought it was a natural fit to go ahead and cover the new Netflix series and with an E that is going to appear

in your Netflix today. So what's this show about Anne with an E? Well I'll tell you according to the official Netflix description and with an E is a coming of age story about an outsider who against all odds and many challenges fights for love and acceptance and her place in the world.

1:16.0

Set in Prince Edward Island in the late 1890s the series centers on Anne Shirley a young orphaned girl who after an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers is mistakenly sent to live with an aging brother and sister.

1:32.0

If this sounds familiar it really should because Anne with an E 2017 is simply a retelling of the classic Anne of Greengables first published in 1908.

1:44.0

And you might have already seen the 1985 mini series version starring Megan follows which is like the gold standard of Anne of Greengables shows this one's going to be a little bit different.

1:57.0

So I would suggest you put that away you don't compare it too much to it because the take is entirely different. Do you agree? I actually wrote in my notes I wonder how the purists are going to feel about this.

2:12.0

Well like the purists who wrote to us and stopped listening because we liked one specific version of Pride and Prejudice over another. I can't believe they did this.

2:24.0

Well okay so I guess truth in advertising I like this version better than the 1985 not that I'm just eating the 1980s version it is very sweet and I can 100% see how it gets in your heart. Oh do I ever I'm the one that likes little house on the prairie and it's not holding up to modern standards of cinematography.

2:45.0

And that's okay it's in my heart it's part of me the way that the Megan follows version of Anne of Greengables is in your heart and that's fine.

2:53.0

This is an additional version and I think it's good. Good doesn't even begin to cover it within the first 10 minutes of watching this I got so excited just it just for me it even though I did fall in love with the 1985 version.

3:08.0

And I have read the books the actress who plays and Amy Beth McNulty just nails her you know she's just she's hurt to me.

3:16.0

And there is an explanation as to why this particular version is so dark.

3:21.0

Yes there's a great explanation it was created and fully written by Moira Wally Beckett who isn't multi Emmy award winning writer previously from breaking bad.

3:34.0

So breaking bad meets Anne of Greengables. Wow it's gritty but it's not saccharine but it's still so charming.

3:45.0

We're going to cover episode one which is longer than all the other episodes do not be afraid they're not all going to be this long.

3:53.0

This is about double the length of all the others. This episode was directed by Nikki Carro who you may know from having directed whale writer and if you haven't seen the whale writer it is delightful.

4:06.0

And whale writer is on Netflix now so if you want to see that too after you binge through and or maybe you want to like watch it episode by episode I don't know anybody that actually does that you know it slowly paces themselves.

4:18.0

Like the olden days when we had to wait a week. I know actually on hulu you have to wait a week they drop a show and then you have to wait a full week for the next episode.

4:31.0

Those hipsters I know and you pay eight dollars is a minimum for this privilege and you get commercials I got some issues with hulu but I digress.
