Summary

#229: Andreas Heide is captain of the sailing yacht 'Barba', and the motivation behind the expeditions they run in far northern Norway. In winter. I should mention that Barba isn't a beefed up expedition yacht - she's a Jeanneau Sun Fast 37, more likely found in the Caribbean than the Arctic. No matter. After learning to sail in 2009, Andreas and his companions started setting out north and looking for Orcas. Here's his incredible story.

Hear that? Those are Orcas. That was recorded by today's guest Andreas Haida, way up in northern Norway.

0:17.3

In fact, a place where we're going to sail on East Bjorn this summer.

0:20.9

That only happens in the wintertime when over a thousand orcas come in along the northern

0:26.1

coast of Norway and feed for the winter. Northern Norway is unique in that because of the Gulf

0:32.5

stream bringing warm water up to the far, far north, it remains ice-free for the winter, and the mixing of cold

0:40.4

and warm water creates a unique ecosystem for nutrients and things like that, so it attracts

0:45.4

these migrating whales. Obviously, in the Arctic, it's dark in the wintertime. So the expeditions

0:51.9

that Andreas describes to go up there and they basically find the

0:55.7

whales and get in the water and swim with them. They have all kinds of photography equipment,

0:59.9

recording equipment, and you'll hear Andreas talk about it. But the idea is to bring these magnificent

1:06.1

creatures back to us. I'm probably never going to go up there in the wintertime and get to do that myself,

1:11.9

but it is pretty cool to live vicariously through Andreas. So these are some sounds that they got

1:17.6

firsthand while swimming with the orcas. Andreas is working on a documentary about their, they've

1:24.7

been up there three years in a row now. I've gotten some incredible footage, some of which you can see on YouTube, which I will put in the show notes of today's episode. But they need funding for the documentary, and you can help them do that. So if you go to the show notes on today's episode, you'll find links to where you can donate to Andreas's cause to help them raise money to make the movie out of this incredible footage that they have with the orcas.

Of course, there's also links on their own website.

That's barba.n-o, B-A-B-A-B-A-N-O.

Andreas tells a cool story about how the boat's actually named after the family dog.

So go to barba.n-o to read more about Andreas, donate to their cause, and just

2:01.7

check out some of the pictures and video from their incredible expeditions up north.

On the Wind is presented by Forbes Horton Yachts.

2:29.1

Today we have the second part of Lee's mini-series where he went down to Annapolis to look at a Tiana 52 with Forbes himself.

2:44.5

All right, I'm headed down to Annapolis to check out a Tiana 52 with Forbes, and it is a cold mid-January day, and it snowed about an inch this morning.
