Summary

This week it’s jarrett’s turn to fly solo, while Tre’vell takes a break. In the wake of the SCOTUS decision on Roe v. Wade, jarrett welcomes back reproductive rights advocate, and board member of the Religious Coalition for Reproduction Choice Asha Dahya. She and jarrett take a look at the post-Roe world as people of faith, and how the Supreme’s Court decision runs contrary to the establishment clause and is rooted less in the Bible than it is in politics and white evangelical supremacy.

Hello, ladies and gentle them. Welcome to fan side of the podcast for all those complex and complicated conversations about the great areas in our lives. I am solo dolo, but here to do it with a special guest co host, but first I'm Jared Hill.

And I am Asha Daya. I'm a TEDx speaker. I'm a producer. I'm an author. I am a reproductive justice advocate. And I am super happy to be joining me today.

0:29.0

Jared, thank you for having me as a guest.

0:31.0

Absolutely. Trevelle is a way taking some time for themselves as I am always advocating for. And if any of you know me very well, you've probably.

I'm heard Asha's voice before coming up on the show this week. I felt like it was vital to discuss Roe v Wade. But I struggle with how we would have this conversation in a way that feels different than all the hot takes that we're seeing in the world.

0:52.0

As I said, if you've been following my work over the past 10 years, you've probably heard Asha on my first show back to reality. She was with me at a short time that I had Buzzfeed and then also a channel queue on the radio.

1:03.0

There were a few points that were interesting in our conversation preparing for today's show that said I kind of want to blow out the format for our popcorn past that we normally have here in the a segment in the fan tie.

1:15.0

Because if ever there was a complex and complicated conversation, it would be the fall of Roe v Wade. So first we're going to kind of talk about what this this week has felt like just full disclosure.

1:25.0

We're taping the show on Monday. So there will certainly be things that will happen in the time between when we're recording this episode and when it comes out.

1:32.0

But we want to talk about what it has felt like. But then we want to talk about some of the interesting conversation we had around faith in the way that faith communities have really kind of guided this.

1:43.0

This push for the fall of Roe and how it's very white Christianity that we've been seeing so much of that has been a part of this conversation and Asha has a really interesting story about her faith background that will get into a little bit more.

1:57.0

But before we do all of that, Asha, I'm I'm curious to know what your top line feelings have been your thoughts about this as we've kind of set through knowing this was coming and then it arriving and it's still feeling really jarring even with the

2:12.0

warning that we had. Yeah, absolutely. It's I think the word that I've been thinking about a lot is heavy and heavy because there's so much to digest.

2:22.0

We're only a few days out from the ruling, even though if you've been following a lot of you know frontline activists and reporters and advocates.

2:33.0

They've been sounding the alarm for many years being called hysterical, but you know, I've been reading these along the way in the back of my mind, even I as someone who's very heavily involved in reproductive rights and justice journalism and media, even the back of my mind, I thought, you know, they're not going to do something's going to prevail and common sense.

2:55.0

But you know, I think I just have to remind myself that we're living in completely unprecedented times. There's so much uncertainty going on.

3:02.0

And the heaviness is real, no matter who you are, I think there's a lot to digest.

3:07.0

So I've really been feeling a bit tired and overwhelmed, you know, just trying to take it moment by moment.

3:13.0

I think it's easy for people who have a voice and a platform to immediately feel the responsibility of share all the links, do the things and point people in the right direction.

3:23.0

And people are asking me questions and it's okay to just take a moment to breathe and sit in that heaviness because in those moments is how we kind of figure out the right path forward rather than just the speediest path forward, which may not always be right.

3:38.0

So it's heavy.

3:40.0

And our conversation, I was saying to you that I hear in your tone that there's a bit of guilt and shame around this happening. And I've not really heard folks in activism talk about that as much.
