Journalist Kathleen McLaughlin investigates the multi-billion dollar global plasma industry. Kathleen needs $15,000-a-dose medication to treat her rare autoimmune condition. While she sits for hours at a time, just down the block is one of over 1,000 blood donation centres in the USA extracting plasma, which forms an essential part of her treatment. Kathleen investigates the origins of her plasma-based medication and learns why people are resorting to plasma donation to stay out of debt, who is profiting from this booming trade and why the burden of global production is rooted in the US.

0:00.0 | My name is Kathleen McLaughlin. I am a journalist and right now I'm also a patient. I have an infusion every few weeks of a drug that's made from human blood. I'm having one right now, which is why you might hear these beeps in the background. It's the steady noise of an infusion pump, which pushes the drug, human immunoglobin, |

0:26.5 | I'm sitting in a red recliner with my feet up. |
0:29.8 | It's all very comfortable, apart from the fact that I'll be in this chair all day, |
0:34.1 | working, writing, watching a little television, but I'm tied to a plastic infusion bag |

0:57.6 | I lead an active life, and that's all thanks to other people's blood. I've spent many days like this |

1:26.8 | There are over a thousand commercial plasma donation centers in the USA. |
1:31.2 | There's one just a few blocks from where I'm sitting. |
1:34.1 | And you can find donation centers all over my home state of Montana. |
1:39.5 | How often do you donate plasma? |
1:41.8 | Twice a week. Is it worth the money for you? |
1:44.5 | To me, yes. |
1:45.5 | It helps me get to a little bits at a time. |
1:48.7 | It gets me by until I do it again. |
1:51.6 | How long do you think you'll be doing this for? |
1:54.2 | Probably until I can anymore, to be honest. |
1:57.8 | I hope my plasma can help someone else, but that's, you know, my hopes. |
