How do you know if a breeder is truly reputable? How do I fit a new puppy into my daily routine? Why do some vets say raw food is dangerous for dogs? How do I calm a leash-lunging dog? What’s the best way to cure puppy separation anxiety? How do I help my hyper dog relax? These are just a few of your questions I’m answering in today’s Ask Me Anything about raising and training brilliant, healthy, joyful puppies and dogs using positive reinforcement.

In this episode I’m asked:

• How to teach self-control to a hyper dog.
• How to protect a dog’s confidence and your connection when training games fail.
• Does training with treats encourage dogs to follow you instead of settling down?
• How do I calm a leash-lunging, reactive dog?
• Do I make my own raw dog food?
• How to train a puppy with separation anxiety?
• Can reinforcement-based dog training really be as effective as balanced?
• How many times a week do you recommend practicing agility?
• What is overtraining in dog agility?
• How many different marker words do you use for one dog?
• Why do you name dog behavior rewards differently?
• Are there dogs that can’t learn agility no matter your effort?
• How did I bring Prophet to Canada from Switzerland.
• Why ‘slap’ and ‘push’ dogs when playing tug?
• How to help a Border Collie pup who lunges at and chases cars.
• How do I balance puppy training and a hectic life?
• Do you prefer male or female dogs?
• When to reduce treat rewards in dog training?
• Are breeders registered with the AKC CKC de facto reputable?
• What’s your take? My vet said feeding raw food is dangerous due to disease risk from infected animals.
• What’s a good course recommendation for a first-time dog owner who wants to do agility?

All kinds of amazing questions, dog training questions have come in over the past month.

0:04.7

Questions from my daily routine to feeding raw to how to pick a breeder. And that leads us to

0:11.1

another great Q&A.

0:29.3

Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shaped by Dog. So many great questions have come in from you guys. And thank you for your questions. I think that this is going to have to be more than just a monthly

0:35.5

event because so many good questions, some I will

0:38.5

make full podcast episodes from and I'm going to answer as many questions as I can right now.

0:45.4

First question, how do I teach self-control when my dog loses at any time we return home

0:52.1

from an outing? You don't mention the age of your dog or the breed of

0:55.7

your dog. I like to have teach my dog hot zones and I'll have either a raised dog bed or a

1:01.8

regular dog bed. Number one, I've cooled my dogs out after they have walked. But one of our

1:06.9

previously our youngest dog belief, she goes on what we call her calming bed. It's just a mat in the

1:13.8

living room that just allows her to chill out because she used to be that dog would come in and

1:18.5

get the zoomies and go cray craye, which would upset the other dogs and it's, no, you've just

1:22.7

been out, you had a big walk, you come and that calming bed will only work if you've done the relaxation

1:29.1

protocol, which you're going to find here on Shape by Dog podcast episode number 191.

1:34.1

So teach your dog how to relax, how to be calm. Then you can use the calming bed effectively.

1:40.7

Next question. How do I maintain accountability for psychological safety and connection

1:45.5

when reinforcement games fail? So, Richie, this is a really, like, deep question. And I wasn't

1:53.4

really sure how to answer it. But I decided, like, what if we just approach, why does

1:58.5

dog training fail? And dog training fails for potentially a lot of

2:02.4

reasons. Number one is human error, human mechanics, your application of a process, your application

2:10.5

of a methodology. So, that could lead to why somebody can try, you know, maybe see what I'm doing on a YouTube video without
