This is the Guardian. It's that time of year again when scientists behind big discoveries receive a call from Sweden.

A journalist called my son and so my son called.

Have you been getting calls from Sweden?

You should answer the phone.

He says.

A call that ushers them in to one of the most exclusive clubs out there, Nobel Prize winners,

and changes their lives overnight.

Where are you? Where did the news reach you?

I'm in a cheap hotel in California and I was planning to get an MRI scan today, but I guess I'll have to cancel that.

It's a week of anticipation for science journalists too,

as they refresh their browsers waiting to find out exactly what they'll be writing about.

Often these are pretty gnarly topics and to explain them really clearly is pretty often

often a challenge I've got to say.

There are subjects that certainly could come up.

Well look I'll make a prediction now

not that it will come to pass anytime soon but I would put a bit of money on it coming to pass at some point in the next 10 years.

But there's always room for a curveball.

I think it was a real surprise.

And other scientists, you know, I spoken to have shared surprise.

So today we hear about the 2024 Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine, Physics and Chemistry.
