Here's your closing bell brief for Monday, December 15th. I'm Catherine Sullivan for the Wall Street Journal.

U.S. stocks finished lower today, wrapping up a volatile trading session. The tech-heavy NASDAQ

led the decline falling by 0.6 percent, as worries surrounding the artificial intelligence boom continued to knock the technology sector.

The S&P 500 dropped by 0.2% and the Dow slipped by 0.1%.

Meanwhile, gold and silver were standouts globally, with gold futures settling near a record high.

That helped send shares in mining companies

Newmont and Freeport McMorrin higher. And Bitcoin dropped below $87,000 as investors shed riskier assets.

Among other companies, iRobot shares tumbled almost 73% after the Roomba Maker declared bankruptcy over the weekend.

Service Now stock dropped nearly 12% on reports that the AI-driven platform was near a deal to buy cybersecurity startup, Armis.

Zillow shares were down almost 8% after a technology strategist noted that Alphabet's Google was testing a new real estate advertising

format. And Santa Fe shares fell more than 3% after the drug maker's experimental multiple

sclerosis treatment was hit by another U.S. regulatory delay, along with a late-stage trial

failure. Heads up, an artificial intelligence tool helped us make this episode
