Hello, SFIA audio listeners. In this month's Nebula exclusive, big alien theory,

0:05.2

we're asking the reason alien civilizations might be rare is because most aliens are huge.

Many people worry a future controlled by artificial intelligence is one many others will not resist,

0:28.9

instead welcoming our machine overlords, and perhaps they will be right to do so.

0:34.9

So today we will be talking about governments run by artificial intelligence, computer minds

0:39.9

telling us what to do.

0:41.7

A few months back we did an episode called Machine Overlords and Post-Discontent Societies,

0:46.7

and since post-discontent societies are the dark mirror reflection of utopian post-scarcity

0:51.7

societies, it puts an unfortunate negative tone on the notion of

0:55.5

artificial intelligence running things. So in that episode we looked at the darker side of

1:00.7

machine overlords while looking at the darker side of advanced civilizations. However, the

1:05.3

whole reason governments run by computers show up so much in science fiction is because the

1:09.6

concept has a lot going for it.

1:11.7

At some point, we will have to admit to ourselves that it's easier to put a machine in charge

1:16.7

than have someone we don't like running the show. Ideally, such a machine-run system does not

1:22.3

pick favorites and does not take bribes or have biases. Events of the last 6,000 years have called into

1:28.2

question all competence to self-govern. In many ways, all the science fiction showing that computers

1:33.4

are bad rulers can be viewed as anti-computer propaganda, and today we will demonstrate

1:39.0

the advantages of getting read of our flawed human leadership and surrendering our sovereignty to

1:44.1

sober computer control.
