1:01.1	Joseph Weisenbaum designed the Eliza program in 1966.
1:05.8	He was a computer scientist at MIT.
1:08.5	And the program was the first of its kind, a machine that could have a conversation with a person.
1:14.6	Eliza's programming was based on person-centered therapy. In a therapist office, that would mean the patient leads the conversation.
1:23.6	And in this case, Eliza would basically take in information from the user and kind of feed that back in the form of questions.
1:31.3	The thing is, Weisenbaum was trying to expose how superficial conversation with a machine could be, trying to prove that machines could never really convincingly converse with humans.
