Welcome to Goldman Sachs Exchanges. I'm Alison Nathan, and I'm here with George Lee, co-head of the Goldman Sachs Global Institute.

0:11.9

Together we're co-hosting a series of episodes exploring the rise of AI and everything it could mean for companies, investors, and economies.

0:22.6

George, great to see you again.

0:23.6

You too, Alison. Thank you.

0:25.6

So, George, today we're discussing one of the biggest anxieties, I would say, about the rise of AI, which is the impact on jobs.

0:32.6

I would say even prior to the amazing advances in the technology that we've seen over the

0:38.0

last few years and that you and I have discussed a lot on this podcast, there have been a lot

0:42.3

of questions about the extent to which AI will ultimately replace workers.

0:48.4

0:55.9

though, since we've seen the launch of ChatDBT, which is very hard to believe.

0:59.7

1:09.2

start to reveal some answers to these questions.

1:12.2

So to that end, I'm excited to welcome my colleague from Goldman Investment Research, Joseph Briggs,

1:18.2

who leads our global economics research. He's done some really truly informative and

1:23.5

formative work, I would say, on the economic implications of AI more broadly and certainly

1:28.4

on this topic. Joseph, thanks for joining us. Great to be here, Alison. Great to be here, George.

1:33.8

And so Joseph, before we just dive into all the details, as I just said, we've talked a lot about

1:38.5

the advances of the technology. It's come a long way in the last few years, but I think we'd all

1:42.4

agree that the adoption is still pretty early.

1:46.2

So is it too early to see tangible signs on the labor market?

1:51.5

Yeah, so when we look at adoption, we're currently tracking about 9% of companies in the U.S. using AI for regular production.
