It's a Monday in February of 2020, which means it's a couple of weeks before the coronavirus

outbreak is going to bring the nation to a halt.

But right now, we are deep inside the state of Mississippi near the town of Carthage, and

we've come here to meet a group of warm-up immigrants who have just finished up an English class.

By the time we got there, class had just been dismissed, but people were mingling outside,

surrounded by plain, single-story buildings.

We approached two women, and I can hear that they're speaking mom.

It's a century's old Mayan language, and so it's pretty surreal to be hearing it right

here in the heart of Mississippi.

One of the women, Federica has her daughter with her.

Federica is not her real name, by the way.

She has a case pending with immigration.

Her daughter has a long black ponytail, and she's curious, but also a little shy, and I'm

immediately impressed by her talent.

She's trilingual.

You wait a second.

You're like a queen here.

So how old are you?

12.

You're 12?

Yeah.

So you speak English?
