Kia Milburn. Hello and Jeremy Gilbert. Hello. And in this episode we are talking about surrealism now? Why do we care about this topic?

Well, there's a very proximate reason, which is somebody on Twitter called

At Blooms in Utopia, prompted us to discuss the realism saying he just read a chapter

in Robin D.G Kelly's book, Black Freedom, is it, I think the box is called?

And he says, and it just made me think that surrealism is just a classic ACFM topic.

And we've had it on our list for a while and we thought

yeah actually it really is time that we discussed surrealism because it is if you learn to look

for look around the history of the weird left it is inescapable I think.

Just to stress we did already have it on the list, just before all the friends who suggested

topics we haven't done yet feel slighted.

Yeah, and obviously surrealism as an intellectual, aesthetic, artistic political projects in the 20th century mainly, but also arguably in the 21st is encapsulates a whole load of themes that have always been

central to our interests and concerns on the show and the surrealist movement

was really an inspiration to and a provocation for a lot of the theory and philosophy that we talk about and draw on.

So there are many reasons for talking about it.

Yeah, I agree. I think it's a quintessential ACFM topic because because of that kind of the weirdness that comes out with surrealism. And I think I'm interested in exploring both understanding more

about the movement and who they were and what they were trying to achieve and I

think they raised some interesting questions but also, I know this is a bit of a stereotype,

but I am interested in the visual art

because I find it really kind of peaks my interest. And there's also a Dali film out, I think.

So those are all good reasons.
