Suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann may seek separate trials for the six murders he is currently charged with, according to his defense attorney. Heuermann, 60, took longer to get to court than anticipated, spurring Judge Timothy Mazzei to quip to court officers, “Did you walk him over from the jail?” Asa Ellerup, Heuermann’s estranged wife, also appeared in court with their family dog, who was recently registered as a service dog. She did not speak to reporters. Heuermann appeared to shake his head as prosecutors announced the turning over of new evidence to the defense, including up to 30 more terabytes of data seized from the searches of his house. The data includes 1,600 pages of lab reports. The prosecution team also announced that up to 60,000 pages of evidence had been turned over to the defense since his June 6 court appearance, when he was charged with the murders of Sandra Costilla and Jessica Taylor. “There’s definitely going to be a motion at some point in time to sever the [trials for the] six individuals,” Michael Brown, Heuermann’s defense attorney, told reporters. “The most recent two were victims of the indictment, specifically Costilla and Taylor, I know strategically why the prosecutor wanted to put them in, because the more the merrier, but they have nothing to do with the others. The MO is different, the way that the murders allegedly were carried out were different, where those bodies were deposited or left is completely different. So as we know here about these Gilgo Beach murders, those two have nothing to do with this.” (LI Press)

0:44.3	And I know that at this point, I must always say that Rex Hulman is innocent until proven guilty like every defendant in our country.
0:55.2	And we go back and we realize where this started when we heard of the Gilgo Form,
1:01.8	Maureen Brainer Barnes, Melissa Patelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello.
1:07.5	And very, very recently, they added two more cases to it.
1:12.6	And you see on the screen here, Jessica Taylor and Sandra Castilla.
1:18.6	And Jessica, excuse me, Sandra Castia, her case goes back to 1993,
1:25.6	which really is so interesting because
1:30.4	Brecht human is now 60 years old. That would have made him 29 years old
1:38.2	if he in fact did kill Sandra Castia and her body was dumped out in Southampton and Jessica
1:48.5	Taylor's body was found I believe in Manneville and that was in 2003 so these cases
1:58.0	when they connect them together and the commonality with a lot of the physical evidence, of course,
2:04.6	is the mitochondrial DNA,
2:08.6	a technology that has evolved to where today they are able to do unbelievable things with evidence.
2:17.9	And in the case of Sandra Castilla, a hair, mitochondrial DNA underneath her body on some canvas
2:27.4	that was underneath her body was identified as Rex humans.
2:33.1	Or the mathematical equation they use is like one quintrillion
