Summary

When stars die, do their planets die too? What can possibly survive after a supernova explosion? How will the death of the sun affect our solar system? Can zombie planets rise from the dead? I discuss these questions and more in today’s Ask a Spaceman!

The first ever exoplanet ever discovered.

0:13.8

I'm talking about the first planet found around a star other than the sun.

0:18.5

The first one ever in the whole history of human civilization, we have been wondering about

0:23.4

the existence of planets around other stars since forever.

0:27.0

And the first one finally spotted was around a dead star.

0:33.5

And not just any dead star.

0:35.0

I mean, there's a lot of different kinds of dead stars, but a pulsar.

0:38.0

And if you're morbidly curious, the pulsar was named PSRB-1257 plus 1-2.

0:45.8

I'm not in charge of naming things in astronomy as usual, as you already know.

0:50.1

And this irks me greatly because I wish I was in charge of naming things because I would name the star to host the first ever discovered Exoplanet anything but PSRB-1257 plus 1-2.

1:03.8

PSR.

1:05.3

Poser?

1:05.9

Like, why did that become the short version of it?

1:08.8

Never mind.

1:09.6

Never mind.

1:10.1

That's just a rant for a different day

1:12.7

anyway this star this pulsar is a 2,300 light years away and yeah it hosts a planet and

1:20.7

think about what just what like a pulsar is an object that is more massive than the sun, like two or three times more massive

1:30.3

than the sun. It is no bigger than your neighborhood. These things are a few miles across. These

1:37.0

things spin up to thousands of revolutions per minute. That's faster than the blender in your kitchen.

1:43.2

These things host some of the strongest
