Hello, and welcome back to Practicing Human, the podcast where every day we're

0:05.4

getting a little better at life. I'm your host, Cory Muscarra, and in today's

0:11.0

episode, I'm going to share with you the What If Exercise. More to come on that in

0:17.2

a moment, first let settle in together with the sound of the bells.

0:30.0

Okay, so the What If Exercise. This is a bit of a cognitive exercise that we can

0:50.4

use when we find ourselves caught up in fear and anxiety, specifically around an

0:57.2

anticipated negative outcome. I talked about this in the past on the podcast, but a lot

1:53.0

you mean, so what? It's like, yeah, no, that terrible thing that's going to happen, so

1:57.3

what? And what's great about this exercise, and I'll walk you through it more specifically

2:02.6

in a moment, is two things. The first of which is that we get to see that usually the

2:09.5

narrative and the story in our mind of what we think will happen, the What If That

2:15.1

happens is usually a bit ridiculous, and is the total catastrophizing of the situation.

2:22.5

But the next thing we get to see is that usually there's some common end point of, you

2:29.2

know, where we're dying, nobody loves us, whatever it might be. And you get to practice
