Summary

My special guest is Margery Metzger who's here to discuss her book about a ruthless serial killer that had innocent children on his mind. Get her book Hidden Demons: Evil Visits A Small New England Town on Amazon. On January 7, 1994, residents of the Berkshire Hills woke up to a typical snowy winter day in the majestic woods of Western Massachusetts. The quaint New England towns, the idyllic scenery and the people who lived there could have stepped out of a Norman Rockwell painting. Rocked as imaginable evil converged on them, a pall would be cast over the region and its inhabitants for years to follow. That day, a trial was beginning for a college student who celebrated his 18th birthday by purchasing an assault rifle, then opening fire on campus killing two and wounding four others. Elsewhere, two young girls were accosted in the changing room at the local pool. Another young girl narrowly escaped being abducted at gunpoint on her way to school. Her quick thinking resulted later in profound repercussions regarding the case of a young boy who vanished from a strip mall, baffling law enforcement, his body discovered three years earlier by deer hunters in a remote wooded area 200 miles away. All these events appeared unrelated, but it seemed to police agencies and local residents that the world had suddenly gone mad. After all, they told each other, “These things don’t happen here!” In chilling, dramatic narrative Hidden Demons: Evil Visits a Small New England Town, by Margery Metzger, details these events and reveals a savage serial killer who lurked in the shadows. But the bravery of a father and daughter, and the remarkable work of law enforcement officers, would turn the table. It's super easy to access our archives! Hi there, I'm K-Town, and on this edition of Mysterious Radio.

0:04.6

I am retired. I'm a former social worker, a mediator,

0:33.6

an exercise therapist, and a director of a 30-year director of a film festival,

0:41.6

so I've done a lot of different things. In my retirement, I'd never written before,

0:48.6

and I'd never really been truly drawn to true crime.

0:52.6

The reason I decided to write this book was because I knew the police officer and her daughter,

1:00.6

and his daughter, who both apprehended criminals on the same day,

1:07.6

and these criminals were really on the cusp of escalating their criminal activity.

1:13.6

And I saw, wow, you know, father and daughter, same day, this is just a really good story.

1:19.6

I knew them because the daughter used to babysit for my kids.

1:23.6

And I always loved when she babysit, because her father was a police officer,

1:27.6

and he always used to drive around by my house to make sure everything was okay

1:30.6

while the girls were watching my kids. So I always felt really safe.

1:35.6

They taught me this story many years ago, and I just put it aside,

1:39.6

because I was so busy with other things in my life.

1:42.6

But in retirement, I decided, you know, I think this would make a good book.

1:49.6

And that's what drew me to write this story.

1:53.6

So it's really a story, not only of crime, but of justice being served with the crime,

2:02.6

and a father and daughter, who both apprehended criminals on the same day.

2:07.6

Were they both police officers?

2:09.6

No, father was a career police officer.

2:12.6

The daughter was a college student. She was in her senior year in college,
